Virgin Care are a major provider of health and care services across the UK, having served more than six million people since their formation in 2006. They provide a wide range of services, including walk-in and community healthcare centres, many of which are in partnership with the NHS. A key challenge that Virgin Care were facing was that they operate and maintain around 30 websites for the various health care centres and clinics that they operate. Many of these were already WordPress websites using a shared theme, but this gave them limited flexibility, and so when we first met them, they were seeking a partner who could design and develop a completely new theme that could be rolled out across the majority of the 30 service centre websites.
Working closely with Virgin Care’s internal marketing and communications team, we designed and developed a completely new, high-impact and beautifully designed custom WordPress theme that could be easily rolled out to the existing service websites. The new theme was designed to work around their existing content so that the transition would be as easy as possible, but we also added a number of improvements and enhancements to augment and extend the existing websites. Furthermore, we developed the site so that the branding could be changed depending on where it would be used. At the flick of a switch in the WordPress admin, the site can be changed from Virgin Care-, NHS- or third party-branded. We provided on-site training to take them through the process of updating the existing websites, and we received glowing feedback from Virgin Care’s team on just how easy it was. The flexibility that the new themes gave them inspired them to create even more websites and use the theme in new and interesting ways. They were so impressed with how much flexibility the new theme gave them that a few months later, they commissioned us to further enhance and improve the theme so that it could be used to create their main corporate website at www.virgincare.co.uk. As part of a phase two project, we added a raft of new features including a modular page builder, which had a suite of editorially designed modules giving them even more flexibility to create interesting and engaging page layouts.
Virgin Care’s new custom WordPress website theme has given their internal communications team an amazing level of flexibility and customisation and has allowed them to create engaging and beautifully designed content across their suite of 30+ service websites, as well as their main corporate website. The new WordPress theme means their internal team can easily manage and maintain the website themselves, removing the need for expensive outsourcing costs. The end result is a suite of websites that are beautifully designed, engaging and consistent, and perfectly reflect Virgin Care’s branding and values. And as the new websites are fully responsive and built to the very latest standards, they should keep returning value for many years to come.
